FIA Appoints Rui Marques as F1 Race Director

Rui Marques has been appointed as the FIA's F1 race director for the 2025 season, following his previous role as Niels Wittich's deputy. With Claire Dubbelman now serving as his permanent deputy, both Marques and Dubbelman aim to enhance consistency in race direction, an area that has faced fluctuations since the passing of Charlie Whiting. This leadership restructuring is part of the FIA's broader initiative to develop a robust talent pool of race officials through the High Performance Programme, focusing on diversity and accessibility.

The FIA's adjustments also include plans to introduce multiple race directors to alleviate the pressures of the role, and the organization will establish a dedicated Remote Operations support center in Geneva. This setup is inspired by systems used in other sports, such as VAR in football, and aims to enhance governance and operational smoothness during races. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has emphasized the need for new talent in race management, indicating a strategic evolution in officiating within motorsport as they prepare for future challenges.
