Indy 500 winner Hunter-Reay named Arrow McLaren sporting director
Summary
Arrow McLaren appointed Ryan Hunter-Reay sporting director of its INDYCAR team. He will oversee car performance, shape race strategy, lead driver development and serve as the link between competition, engineering, the driver lineup and commercial partners. He will report to Team Principal Tony Kanaan, and the team said the appointment also positions Hunter-Reay to help drive commercial growth and McLaren Racing’s broader Triple Crown ambitions.
The appointment formalizes responsibilities he has held since joining the team at the season opener in St. Petersburg and competing in the 110th Indy 500 in the No. 31 car. He had been serving as a consultant and part-time driver for Arrow McLaren. Hunter-Reay said he was "incredibly honored and excited" and thanked Zak Brown, Tony Kanaan and the board for the opportunity. Kanaan, who said he and Hunter-Reay previously collaborated in 2010, welcomed the appointment as a move to strengthen on-track results and partner relationships.
Arrow McLaren highlighted Hunter-Reay’s credentials as the 2014 Indy 500 winner and the 2012 INDYCAR Series champion, noting career totals of 18 INDYCAR wins, seven poles, 1,610 laps led and 296 starts across 23 years of top-level American open-wheel racing. The team said it will decide at a later date who will drive its fourth entry in the 2027 Indy 500.
