TNT Adds Jimmie Johnson to In-Season Challenge Booth
Summary
Jimmie Johnson is joining TNT Sports as a studio analyst for the network’s coverage of NASCAR’s second annual In-Season Challenge, adding the seven-time Cup Series champion to a five-week, five-race single-elimination event that starts June 28 at Sonoma Raceway. Johnson said the role appeals to him because it gives him a chance to share his passion for NASCAR from a different perspective. Social media comments around the announcement also referenced his “Jimmie Jam” alter ego and a more irreverent image tied to him.
TNT has scheduled Johnson to appear on-site at Sonoma on June 28, at North Wilkesboro Speedway on July 19 and at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 26, when the tournament ends and the final two drivers race for the championship trophy and a $1 million prize. All three of Johnson’s appearances will air on TNT and stream on HBO Max. Johnson retired from full-time racing after the 2020 season and previously worked as a NASCAR analyst for NBC Sports.
TNT is building out its broadcast team around the event, with Marty Smith set to anchor pre-race and post-race coverage alongside Dale Earnhardt Jr., Steve Letarte and Jamie McMurray. Jeff Burton will fill in for Johnson on the July 5 race at Chicagoland Speedway and the July 12 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. TNT reportedly saw a 52% increase in viewership last summer.
