Formula 1 Partners with Qatar Airways for Sustainability
Summary
Formula 1 is bolstering its commitment to sustainability through a partnership with Qatar Airways to invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aiming to cut carbon emissions from its air freight operations. This collaboration is a vital component of F1's strategy to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030, with expectations to reduce emissions by over 8,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent during the 2024 season. In addition, F1 plans to transition to advanced sustainable fuels in its vehicles, with a complete switch scheduled for 2026, and is making logistical adjustments to lessen travel-related emissions.
The partnership with Qatar Airways is part of a broader initiative that also includes an agreement with DHL to decrease emissions by 19% compared to traditional fuels. Furthermore, F1's sustainability efforts are set to extend to the feeder series, with both F2 and F3 transitioning to sustainable fuels next season after previously adopting 55% sustainable fuel. Ellen Jones, head of ESG at Formula One, highlighted the significance of these efforts in reducing carbon footprints and advancing sustainable technologies in the sport. The initiative will leverage the 'book and claim' system to ensure SAF effectively replaces fossil fuels in aviation.
