General Motors Aims for Formula One Entry by 2026

    Nov 22nd, 2024

    Summary

General Motors is making significant strides towards joining the Formula One grid with its own team as early as 2026, backed by renewed momentum for the Andretti Global bid. Initially rejected in January, this bid has gained traction following a restructuring of Andretti's senior management and the active participation of General Motors. Although the current ten teams in F1 have shown limited enthusiasm for new entrants, officials are increasingly open to the idea, recognizing the potential benefits for the sport.

As part of this initiative, a GM-led team has been working on a car to meet the requirements for a new entrant, successfully fulfilling FIA criteria. An announcement regarding the team's approval could be expected imminently. With Andretti Global stepping back from the Chevrolet program, GM has the opportunity to start afresh. Discussions are reportedly advanced, aiming for GM to enter Formula 1 as an 11th team, likely in partnership with Andretti, while utilizing customer engines from either Ferrari or Honda in the initial years. This move is anticipated to enhance the sport’s popularity and revenue, as suggested by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
