Hungaroring qualifying set to decide F2, F3

Budapest hosts the final race weekends before the summer break for FIA Formula 2 and Formula 3 at the Hungaroring, where qualifying is expected to be decisive. Both series run practice and qualifying on Friday, followed by a sprint race on Saturday and a feature race on Sunday. The circuit’s twisty layout leaves little room for overtaking, clean air is worth more than a tow, and dirty air can be costly. In F2, Pirelli has brought the Medium and Soft compounds, with high temperatures and tyre degradation also set to be major factors.

F2 arrives with Invicta Racing and Rafael Câmara riding the momentum of a double win at Spa, and Invicta has not failed to win a race on the Budapest weekend since 2020. Invicta Racing and Campos Racing are the only teams to have swept both race wins at a single F2 round this season. Câmara sits third in the standings on 125 points, 36 behind the leader, and can equal the Formula 2 single-season pole record of five this weekend. Gabriele Minì is second, 27 points behind the leader, Alexander Dunne is still chasing his first win of the season, and Nikola Tsolov leads the championship after another top-five Feature Race finish at Spa, carrying an eight-race scoring streak into Hungary.

In F3, Ugo Ugochukwu leads Freddie Slater by one point, while Théophile Nael is the nearest challenger, 38 points back, and drivers from third to 11th are covered by 20 points, leaving several still in contention. Slater arrives after qualifying on pole and finishing third at Spa, while Ugochukwu scored no points there. Budapest has not produced a win for any current F3 driver, though Ugochukwu and Tuukka Taponen have reached the podium there, and pole position has converted to Feature Race wins in three of the last four visits. Rain is possible on Sunday, which could make the race F3’s first true wet contest of the season and add another strategic layer to the final weekend before the break.
