South Africa Extends Deadline for F1 Bids

South African officials have extended the deadline for bids to host the country's first Formula 1 race since 1993, now set for March 18, 2025. The main contenders include the historic Kyalami circuit, a proposal for a street race in Cape Town, and an ambitious project linked to future developments in Eastern Cape. Minister Gayton McKenzie has indicated Kyalami as the preferred location but recognizes the potential of alternative bids. This extension allows bidders additional time to craft their proposals as South Africa seeks a long-term contract with Formula 1.

The last Grand Prix in South Africa occurred in 1993, and since then, financial constraints have made hosting challenging. McKenzie highlighted the economic and tourism benefits that could arise from hosting F1 events, while also noting the significant hosting fees that may affect public sentiment. With rising interest in Formula 1 across Africa, including bids from nations like Rwanda, South Africa is aiming to reclaim its place in the F1 calendar, potentially by 2027.
